McLaren Drive The Design Competition

McLaren Drive The Design Competition 2nd Place
Recently I entered the McLaren F1 Drive the Design competition, the brief to design a flag for McLaren for the Austin Grand Prix. Out of 1352 entries I came 2nd, firstly being shortlisted into the top 10 by a McLaren panel, then being shortlisted into the top 5 through a social media vote, finally shortlisted into the top two with a Webex fan call vote, where 1000 McLaren fans picked the two favourites out the five, the Webex call hosted by F1 driver Daniel Ricciardo, with Ricciardo picking the winning design.
The design I created, I wanted it to highlight the fact that the Austin Grand Prix was in the US, creating a design which combined the American flag and a racetrack. Using the stripes to create a corner, with a McLaren F1 car driving around it. Using papaya and blue for the colour palette, as these are McLaren's team colours, I wanted the design to be recognisable as McLaren's. As the design was for a flag, I took consideration towards how it needed to be seen from close up and far away, creating a design which is simple, but bold, also considering scale if it was made bigger into a flag.
